Common Causes of No-Start

Oftentimes, vehicles won’t start because of issues with the battery/charging system. A variety of problems can cause automotive batteries to die, such as leaving on your headlights, parasitic draws, old age, and corroded/loose connections. Alternator trouble can also cause the battery to die. Signs of an alternator problem include malfunctioning electrical accessories and a dashboard warning light that flashes on with the letters ALT or GEN or in the shape of a little rectangular battery.

A failing starter is another common issue that causes no-start. You have evidence of a faulty starter if you turn the key and your engine fails to fire up, but your dash lights come on and you hear a clicking sound. A bad starter can also cause a grinding noise.

Fuel-related problems are also often why cars fail to start. If your fuel filter is all gunked-up, then your engine may not be able to take in sufficient fuel to fire up. You can avoid this problem by replacing your fuel filter about every 25,000 miles. A failing fuel pump can also cause no-start if it prevents fuel from going from the tank to the engine. Symptoms of a bad fuel pump include sputtering, surging, decreasing MPGs, and a whining noise coming from the gas tank. If your fuel injectors become sullied by pollutants, then your engine may struggle to start. Pouring a fuel additive into your tank can help with removing pollutants from injectors.
