4 Common BMW Problems to Look Out For
BMW is without a doubt one of the most sought after luxury car brands. For generations they have been building some of the world's finest looking, highest performance sedans, coupes and SUVs. While they may be incredible machines, they are not free of issues. Over the years there are a few problems that BMWs have become known to have, including the following. If you own a BMW, or are planning on purchasing a used one, be on the lookout for these common BMW issues.
Oil Leaks
An oil leak is probable in any car, no matter how fancy or expensive. Alas, BMWs are not safe from the engine-killing oil leak. If you spot a puddle of oil under your BMW do not hesitate to visit a reputable shop, as this problem is sure to grow worse. In recent model years it has been found the most common causes of BMW oil leaks are a malfunctioning fuel pump or a leaky valve cover gasket.
Shaky Brakes
If you drive a 3 series that is nearing 75,000 miles, pay attention. Many owners have reported that their steering wheel will start to shake when they apply the brakes around this mileage point. Mechanics have found the problem doesn't always lie within the brakes, but instead in failing thrush arm bushings, which are rubber bushings critical to the operation of the suspension system.
BMW Overheating
BMWs are notorious for overheating, especially as the mileage adds up. If you drive an e36, there is a good chance of a cracked radiator. In newer models it could be due to a failing water pump.
Popping Out of Gear
If you're a fan of the third pedal, this issue is for you. When the clutch plate starts to wear thin your BMW will likely pop out of first gear as you start to accelerate forward. This is a dangerous issue, as it prevents you from being able to properly control your vehicle. Be sure to get the clutched checked out ASAP if this happens to you.
